Run Coordinator Duties

  • Give daily SLD report at 8:00 AM SLC meeting (MCC) and at 8:30 AM SLD meeting (CEH).
  • Talk to SLC program deputy and make program decisions.
  • Write daily run status report and record daily telephone message.
  • Keep white board problem and message lists up-to-date, check action item list, follow up on problems.
  • Keep track of luminosity and background noise trends. (See logging guide for discussion of good and bad beam conditions.)
  • Review off-line shift reports, follow up on problems.
  • Oversee shifts and enforce shift discipline. Check current and upcoming shifts, make sure shiftees are available and prepared. Make sure shiftees do checklists, spews, calibrations. Help train shiftees (especially experts) who have insufficient experience.

Run Coordinator's Daily Report

  • The normal daily report should include a brief shift summary for the last three shifts, including people on shift, running conditions, and problems. SLC and SLD online Z counts should be reported. The set of standard background plots and the polarization plot should also be shown. The Monday morning report should include a summary of the week's running with off-line Z counts. Copies of all or these reports should be pasted into the Run Coordinator logbook for future reference. There are two possible methods for creating these reports.
    • Writing the report using Netscape GOLD

      • Make sure you are using Netscape GOLD (you can tell by the presence of an edit button on the toolbar). You can start Netscape GOLd on the CEH MAC from the desktop icon.
      • Either
        • Open a previous report using File...Open File in Editor. The daily reports can be found in "Desktop...Run Coordinator Files...HTML Status Reports"
      • or
        • Use the Report Wizard to create a new document.

        • Press the Edit button in the toolbar to begin editing
        • Save the new report in the directory mentioned above.
      • Print the report using the print button, and save it for future reference.

      Writing the report using WORD

The report should be written and filed on the MAC in the CEH (next to the printer). The simplest method is to select a recent report, edit the contents, and file and print the new report. MAC and WORD novices can try the following prescription:

      • Open file with previous report: double click SLD Run Coordinator, double click Status Reports File, double click < file with previous report >.
      • Edit old report to produce new report: click and drag cursor over old text to be deleted (selection turns blue) type in new replacement text.
      • File new report: click File on top menu bar (next to Apple), drag cursor to Save as ... option, enter new file name with appropriate date, click Save (or just Return).
      • Print new report: click File on top menu bar (next to colored Apple icon), drag cursor to Print

    Shift Summary

The daily shift summary should be based on the shift reports written by the expert at the end of each shift. These summaries are pasted into the SLD logbook and entered into the Oracle database. To access the reports from an SLD SCP running on SLDACQ:

    • Navigate to the Shifts panel (Index -> Oracle Database -> Shifts)
    • List the desired report (List + Shift Report + < select shift > + Execute).

    Online Z counts

SLC luminosity measurements are used to make a running online estimate of the number of Zs produced by SLC and recorded by SLD.

From the MCC SCP (left end of Star Wars console):

    • Navigate Index -> Special Display -> Lum History Plots,
    • Select the desired quantity to plot:
      • SLC INTZ * BSM (SLC Z count)
      • SLD INTZ * BSM (SLC Z count, gated by SLD livetime)
      • SLD CDC ON * BSM (SLC Z count, gated by CDC voltage)
    • Select last 24 hours or set explicit begin and end times (to set the begin and end times: Plot Scale Panel -> Enter X Scale), record the numbers ... get the difference max - min
    • Select Print Graph Display to get a printout. (optional)

    Off-line Z counts

Off-line Z counts are best accessed using the SLD status display. The Z count for the last few days, calculated from the online Bhabhas and summed by shift is available on Page 18. The Z count for the last 24 hours is also available on this page. The page updates every 30 minutes, so the best time to get the 24 hour summary for the 8am MCC meeting is just after 7:30am.

The count of the off-line Z's for the run to date is available on Page 14. Use only the CDC on number so as not to confuse people at MCC. This number is updated as off-line processing of the data is completed, so it can lack behind the data taking by a few hours or more.

    Background Plots

From the MCC SCP (left end of Star Wars console), navigate Index -> IP Status -> SLD 24hr macro. This will automatically print three standard noise plots on the IMCEH0 printer. Individual history plots for the different noise signals are available in the SLD History Panel. The DC noise plot showing the average noise and tails is particularly useful.

    Polarization Plot

From the SLD POLSCP (across from MCC SCP), navigate Index -> Compton Polarim -> Data Quality -> ABS(POL) CKV (fxdscale). This generates a nice polarization plot with error bars.

Run Status Report

The daily run status report is a computer message distributed to the world at large through SLD news. It should summarize the past 24 hour's running, including an update on SLC performance and problems, any SLD hardware or software problems, plans for the current day, and a luminosity summary. A printed copy should be pasted into the Run Coordinator log book.

A simple web based wizard is now available for creating these daily reports.

Run Status Telephone Message

The daily run status telephone message is a recording available to the world at large by dialing (415) 926-2011. To record a new message, dial 5110 and follow the prompts:

  • enter mailbox: 1000#
  • enter password: 1000#
  • enter 5 to record new message (terminate with #)
  • enter 2 to review recorded message (terminate with #)

Off-line Shift Reports

The run coordinator should be informed if the people checking the SLD off-line processing discover any serious anomalies. It is also possible to use the web based interface to check on the off-line data and processing. Beware, the web interface tends to omit data from sums and tables when any portion of the data is unavailable. This can lead to bizarre and misleading results.

Handy Phone Listings

Should be available on the center portion of the Star Wars Console. In addition, the SLAC Phone Directory on the WWW has a handy search form.
